The Contest Between Harmony & Invention

Aliaskar Abarkas

02/10 — 10/10/2025, 02.00 PM — 06.00 PM

Workshop

The artist Aliaskar Abarkas, currently in residence at Scuola Piccola Zattere, presents the sound workshop The Contest Between Harmony & Invention.

In 1725, Antonio Vivaldi published The Contest Between Harmony and Invention in Venice. At the heart of this collection is the concerto, a form built on the interplay between soloist and ensemble. Its structure highlights contrast and hierarchy—one voice standing out against the many.

During the two workshop sessions, we will take the concert as a starting point, approaching it from a new perspective: as a living structure—something that can be unsettled, reshaped, and reimagined together.

The artist invites participants to reinterpret and recompose Vivaldi’s collection. Works developed during the sessions will contribute to a new composition forming the basis of an upcoming album and exhibition at Scuola Piccola Zattere.

Each workshop will be guided by Abarkas with invited collaborators, creating space to experiment with sound, voice, and silence and explore musical and choreographic scores in unconventional ways.

PROGRAM

The workshop consists of two sessions, and participation in both is required:

October 2–3, 2025, from 2 to 6 PM
October 9–10, 2025, from 2 to 6 PM

The sessions are open to everyone—no musical training is necessary. Participants are invited to bring instruments of any kind: traditional, handmade, or improvised.
